Not much has seemed to change since these photos were taken.

“Don’t call my fraternity a ‘frat.’ I wouldn’t call your country a…” is a familiar phrase that you can probably finish without our help.

The “bros” of @vintagefrat clearly have no hesitation in using the word “frat” and I would guess they throw around that other word equally as much based on what can be gleaned from the content.

Now I didn’t have the traditional ‘rah-rah’ college experience and I’m guessing these guys would classify me as a G.D.I.(God Damn Independent) – but I’m proud of that.  Who needs to be date raped in a dorm room? Not me!

The Numbers Game

I’ve heard the stats: since the first social fraternity was founded in the U.S., every President and Vice President (except for two) were members of fraternities, 76% of all Congressmen and Senators were “Greek,” and 40 Supreme Court Justices were also members of fraternities…(UWGreek.com) but hey, BRO, given the present state of our country that’s not exactly something to brag about.

I get that these figures are impressive to some, but the statistic that comes to mind when I think of fraternities is that fraternity brothers are 300% more likely to commit rape (The Guardian, Frat Brothers Rape 300% More.).

Don’t misread the above as my suggesting that every former fratter is one Jaeger bomb away from dropping a roofie in the PBR you left unattended (though I should note that newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was a member of DKE at Yale), but what I will say – and this is true beyond the fraternal realm – when you put a bunch of young guys under a singular roof with a common tie to bond, levels of testosterone exceeds natural limits and misogyny is often the sad outcome…which becomes evident when you dig just a little bit into the comments these bros are posting on this page.

Is it just locker room talk?

In the wake of the last presidential election, “locker room talk,” and more specifically its acceptability outside of the locker room, has become a relevant, if not pervasive, topic of conversation. The comments on these threads are probably nothing more than that. Locker room talk.  I mean, most of these comments are pretty tame compared to the Orange Orangutan’s now infamous “grab them by the pussy” comment.

Don’t get me wrong, most of the comments I’ve come across are inappropriate and we’re not going to become apologists for assholes that perpetuate toxic masculinity which all too often leads to sexual assault, racism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination, but we also do have a sense of humor and a lot of these comments are also funny as hell…Don’t judge because you’ll probably agree too. I have to admit, I’ve definitely made comments that I’m not proud of, are definitely not “gentlemanly” and if my mom ever heard me say them would result in my having a mouth full of soap…But, at least so far, I’ve been smart enough not to publish these comments in the indelible ink of the internet.

In Conclusion

Funny or fucked up? I don’t know, but it’s also not really my place to say. It’s yours. Regardless of what you conclude, and how offended you may be by the comments, I think we all have to agree that we respect and appreciate these bros right to speak their mind.
