Parse/Error formerly founder and editor of Ufunk, is a self-taught visual artist based in the southern city of Marseille, France who draws inspiration from the sad state of the world.

With exhibits like ‘Tears of Twitter’, Parse/Error takes data available on the platform to visualize the emotional state of the community in real time. In this effort to understand the emotions exhibited by the user of Twitter,  his exhibit tracks the usage of the two most popular emoji online – the happy face and sad face and displays them in a luminous flow.

If anything, this exhibit offers up a new and more interesting method to visualize large data sets with simple methods and code.

Other projects add to the social commentary around climate change and lack of natural resources like ‘Value of Water’, which is water frozen into molds of gold bars and modern currency.

Is Twitter really that sad?

Check out his work and let us know what you think.

– TEARS OF TWITTER – A real-time visualization of the use of ? (crying face) and ? (loudly crying face) emojis around the world. A connected artwork that responds to the emotions published on Twitter. A waterfall of light tears, fed by a global data stream. Connected to the data stream from Twitter, Tears of Twitter is able to detect the presence of these two popular emojis in messages posted by users. It proposes to observe in real time the use of these two emojis, symbolizing tears and sadness, to transform it into a visual and luminous flow. Watch the video!
