Illustrator and renowned Shadowologist keeps your inner child alive.

Vincent Bal may be the world’s greatest Shadowologist. Then again, he also may very well be the world’s only Shadowlogist. Honestly, I’m not really sure about that, and I didn’t really bother to dig too deep into finding out how many Shadowologists there actually are out there in the wild. But this cavalier attitude you may be sensing is not due to a lack of caring, quite the controversy. I didn’t look into it because it just doesn’t matter. All I know, and frankly all I care about, is that when I stumbled upon this page I thought it was really, really cool and brought me back to childhood for a brief moment.

You may be asking yourself the following:

-“Self, what exactly is Shadowology?” And it’s a fair question. It’s the more sophisticated way of saying shadow doodling. But no one ever got noticed being that basic.

But let me offer you two definitions:

Adult Version: Shadowology is an artist’s use of an object’s shadow (sometimes drawing a few additional lines to add detail) to create a new and completely different scene or character that was not present before.

 And…

The ‘FU’ Version: Shadowology is one example of what is possible when a child gives the middle finger to those constantly nagging at the child to, “grow up.” I mean, I personally don’t think it’s a matter of coincidence that the only other time I can recall such a relevant shadow was when Wendy Darling had to sew on that recalcitrant shadow that had just run away from its owner, Peter Pan… the boy who refused to grow up.

Maybe it’s a little bit of both.

To sum things up, whether your childhood passion was shoving plastic soldiers up your nose, seeing how many marbles you could fit in your mouth at once, or creating pieces of art from the shadows made by mundane household objects – don’t let anyone get in the way of your dreams.

You may be able to turn this quirk into a sustainable career – maybe even one with a small degree of celebrity…I mean, isn’t that exactly what the internet is for?
