Every once in a rare while we here at HEYO like to deviate from the topics we typically feature and share with our fam something a tad more refined. Believe it or not, social media platforms can provide intellectual value, even educational value. There is much more to Instagram than just travel photos with pink-hued filters, more to YouTube than contour makeup tutorials, and more to the internet as a whole than porn – you perv.

Enter Jerry Saltz’s Instagram feed as proof that Instagram can provide a platform for beautiful works of art and high brow criticism from the best of the best without all the snobbery. It’s refreshing and exciting when you find someone relatable in a field that is otherwise reserved for elitist and follow their journey on instagram. That’s social media at its best.

An artist in his own right, providing expert criticism to some of the freshest art on the scene, Saltz is the real deal – receiving both a blue check mark and a Pulitzer Prize. He’s the crème de la crème in one of the most erudite and exclusive social circles: THE New York Art World. No, he’s not a gallerist, or a senior studying aesthetics at The New School, he’s legit: Senior Art Critic at the renowned New York Magazine (*gush*). Talk arty to me, Mr. Saltz.

He’s moving the art world forward in his criticisms and introducing it you in a digestible format on Instagram, which is appealing to those who don’t care to read the lengthy critiques and interpretations of these pieces found in the magazine. He’s found a way to connect you to the high society without boring you to death with oil paintings of dead Romans and campestral views. These pieces are contemporary, cool, and something really fresh. Even for those who only want to basque in the beauty of the artwork without digging into the underlying meaning are treated a collection of exciting pieces and BTS scenes of the art world. However, we do recommend actually reading what he writes. It’s quite good!
